Portable 5G Router
The ZTE U50 is a portable 5G mobile hotspot that combines cellular connectivity with Wi-Fi 6, allowing multiple devices to access the internet through a single mobile connection. Supporting 5G NR Release 15 in both Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) modes, it works with different 5G network architectures while retaining compatibility with 4G LTE and 3G UMTS networks. This combination makes the U50 a practical option for mobile internet access, whether connecting a laptop for work, using a tablet for entertainment, or keeping several personal devices online. Its 5G capabilities extend to demanding online activities, including 4K video streaming, cloud gaming, and augmented reality applications.
For high-speed cellular access, the U50 offers theoretical 5G download speeds of up to 2.63 Gbps through ENDC connectivity, which combines LTE FDD and Sub-6 GHz 5G resources. The router supports multiple cellular frequency bands and multi-band ENDC combinations, enabling it to use the spectrum resources available from compatible mobile operators. This also allows the connection to operate across supported network technologies as network coverage changes. Two external TS-9 antenna ports provide an additional connection option for antennas operating on the supported n38, n77, and n78 bands. Actual data speeds depend on network conditions, while the available cellular technologies and frequency support remain important considerations when selecting the U50 for a particular operator.
Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6
The ZTE U50 distributes its mobile internet connection through dual-band Wi-Fi 6, operating on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. With AX1800 wireless performance and 2×2 MIMO technology on both bands, it provides Wi-Fi connectivity for smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other compatible wireless devices. Up to 32 devices can connect to the hotspot, making it possible to share one cellular connection among several users or connected products. Support for Wi-Fi standards from 802.11b/g through 802.11ax also allows devices using different Wi-Fi generations to join the network. Band steering and automatic channel selection complement this wireless configuration, while guest SSID support provides an additional network option for connected users.
A built-in 4500 mAh lithium-ion battery allows the U50 to operate as a portable hotspot without requiring a continuous external power connection. Its USB Type-C interface supports both charging and USB 3.0 data connectivity, bringing these functions together in one physical port. The device also has dedicated power and WPS buttons, giving users direct access to basic operating and wireless connection functions. LED indicators display power, Wi-Fi, and network mode information, so essential connection status remains visible on the device itself. The combination of battery-powered operation, dual-band wireless networking, and straightforward physical controls makes the U50 convenient for maintaining internet access while moving between locations.
Network Management and Security
The ZTE U50 offers browser-based configuration through an adaptive WebUI that can be accessed from a computer, smartphone, or tablet. This provides a local management interface for adjusting network settings without relying on a particular type of connected device. Management functions include connected-device administration, APN configuration, SIM PIN/PUK management, and SMS handling. For additional control over cellular connectivity, frequency locking and cell locking are available. The U50 also supports remote management through TR-069 and MQTT, while FOTA provides a method for firmware updates. ZTE Smartlife app management is available as an optional customized feature, offering another configuration approach where included in the device version.
Network functionality extends beyond sharing a mobile connection. The U50 supports IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack operation, DHCP server functionality, and NAT/NAPT for managing local network connectivity. VPN pass-through is available alongside L2TP and PPTP VPN client functionality. Its firewall settings include port forwarding, port filtering, domain filtering, DMZ, and MAC address filtering, allowing network access to be configured according to specific requirements. Wireless security options include WPA2-PSK and mixed WPA2-PSK/WPA3-PSK modes, complemented by Wi-Fi isolation and guest network functionality. A built-in diagnostic feature can display key operating status information and provide suggested solutions when issues are identified, bringing connection monitoring and troubleshooting into the device's management environment.
