MikroTik GESP

The MikroTik GESP is a Gigabit Ethernet surge protector designed to shield network equipment from lightning strikes, power surges, and static electricity that can occur in outdoor or long-distance Ethernet installations. It is especially useful in scenarios where network cables run between buildings, along masts, or through exposed outdoor environments. By absorbing sudden voltage spikes, GESP helps prevent damage to switches, routers, access points, and wireless radios, reducing downtime and costly hardware replacements. With an estimated MTBF of approximately 100,000 hours at 25°C, it is built for long-term, continuous operation. The device supports full Gigabit Ethernet speeds without introducing noticeable signal loss, making it suitable for professional ISP deployments, enterprise networks, and outdoor wireless links where reliability and equipment protection are critical.

In a typical deployment, GESP units are installed at both ends of a long Ethernet cable: one near antennas or radios mounted on a mast and the other near indoor switches or routers. Each unit is housed in a durable IP67-rated weatherproof enclosure, protecting it from rain, dust, and harsh environmental conditions. Proper grounding is essential for effective surge protection: the grounding wire must be securely connected to a rack, mast, or any grounded structure. For maximum safety, MikroTik strongly recommends using surge protectors on both ends of exposed cable runs. The GESP can usually withstand multiple surge events, but its condition should be checked after major incidents. Installation is simple and secure using the included K-73 fastening set, making it easy to integrate into new or existing networks.
