The Huawei B525s-23a is an LTE wireless gateway that combines mobile broadband access with Gigabit Ethernet uplink capability, allowing it to serve as the central Internet connection for a local network. It supports LTE, UMTS and GSM technologies, so the device can use several generations of mobile service where available. LTE carrier aggregation is supported across listed intra-band and inter-band combinations, helping the gateway use compatible network resources more effectively. For LTE FDD connections, the specified peak rates reach 300 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s upstream, while LTE TDD operation supports up to 220 Mbit/s downstream and 10 Mbit/s upstream.

Local devices can connect wirelessly or by network cable, making the gateway suitable for mixed wired and wireless environments. Its dual-band WLAN supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, with specified wireless data rates up to 300 Mbit/s on 2.4 GHz and up to 1300 Mbit/s on 5 GHz. This gives users a choice between the broader compatibility of the 2.4 GHz band and the higher listed capacity of the 5 GHz band. The gateway can also receive Internet access through its Ethernet uplink, so the same device can distribute either a mobile or wired connection across the local network for everyday connectivity. IPv4 and IPv6 dual-stack support further allows operation with both addressing environments.

The B525s-23a provides three dedicated LAN ports and one combined LAN/WAN port, all using RJ45 connectors. This arrangement supports several wired client devices while preserving the option to use Ethernet as the upstream Internet connection. A micro-SIM slot provides access to cellular service, and a USB 2.0 port is available for compatible USB functions within its stated 500 mA current limit. The gateway also includes an RJ11 telephone port, which can be configured for VoIP or circuit-switched voice operation, allowing a standard telephone to be connected for calling where the selected service and network configuration support it. The unit measures up to 226 × 163 × 52 mm and consumes less than 20 W.

Built-in antennas cover LTE, UMTS, GSM and both WLAN bands, keeping the standard installation self-contained. Two external LTE antenna connectors are also provided for the optional external antenna, which may be useful in locations with weaker reception. The optional antenna is intended for indoor use and should be placed near a window for improved signal conditions, while use during thunderstorms should be avoided. Front indicators show power, Internet status, WLAN/WPS activity, LAN status and cellular signal strength, giving users a direct view of the operating state. Physical controls include a power switch, WPS button and reset button. The gateway is specified for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C, with supported humidity from 5% to 95%.

The gateway includes the core network services needed to create and manage a local network. Its built-in DHCP server can be enabled or disabled, configured with address pools and assigned lease times, while DNS relay supports name resolution for connected devices. NAT and NAPT functions allow multiple local clients to share the available Internet connection, and the device also supports an L2TP VPN client. When this VPN function is enabled, the listed maximum throughput is up to 50 Mbit/s and remains dependent on the network environment. WPS simplifies wireless connection setup, and SSID broadcasting can be enabled or hidden according to the preferred WLAN configuration.

Security and administration functions are available through the local web interface. The firewall can be enabled or disabled and supports filtering by LAN MAC address, LAN IP address and URL, together with DMZ, UPnP and ALG functions. Wireless authentication options include OpenSystem, WEP, WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA2-PSK, with AES and TKIP/AES encryption choices, plus MAC address whitelist and blacklist control. The gateway can manage up to 32 connected stations on each WLAN band and provides status queries for connected clients. Through the Huawei HiLink App, users can view data usage and SMS, manage connected devices, and change the SSID and password. SMS functions include writing, sending, receiving, extra-long messages and group sending to as many as 50 contacts.
