Teltonika TRB143 Industrial M-Bus LTE Gateway for Smart Metering

The Teltonika TRB143 is a compact industrial cellular gateway designed specifically for telemetry, smart metering, and utility monitoring applications. Featuring an integrated M-Bus interface, the device enables efficient remote communication with utility meters and monitoring equipment while combining cellular and wired connectivity in a durable industrial housing. Powered by 4G LTE Cat 4 technology, the gateway supports download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50 Mbps, with automatic fallback to 3G and 2G networks for reliable communication in varying coverage conditions. The integrated M-Bus interface supports up to 250 client devices and can power up to six connected devices directly through the interface. Advanced M-Bus over IP functionality allows remote utility meter communication over IP networks, while features such as connected device scanning, primary and secondary address configuration, and data filtering simplify large-scale utility deployments.

The TRB143 also includes one Gigabit Ethernet port with auto MDI/MDIX support for reliable wired connectivity. Additional mobile networking functions include operator allow and block lists, multiple PDN support, automatic APN configuration, SIM PIN management, band lock, and mobile WAN passthrough. SMS utilities, remote status monitoring, and detailed signal diagnostics provide additional control and visibility for remote installations. The Teltonika TRB143 is powered by RutOS, an OpenWrt-based operating system designed for advanced industrial networking and remote management applications. The gateway supports a wide range of network protocols including TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, MQTT, SNMP, HTTPS, SSH, and VXLAN, enabling flexible integration into industrial and enterprise infrastructures. Static routing, DHCP services, QoS, Smart Queue Management, and DNS over HTTPS help ensure stable and secure data communication. To maintain continuous operation, the device supports automatic failover scenarios using wired or mobile backup connections. Additional features including hotspot functionality, traffic monitoring, network topology visualisation, and SSHFS support provide enhanced network management capabilities.

Security functions are designed for professional industrial deployments. The gateway supports configurable firewall rules, NAT, NAT64, VLAN separation, DDOS prevention, SSH attack prevention, and flexible access control for SSH, CLI, WebUI, and Telnet management interfaces. Authentication options include pre-shared keys, X.509 certificates, TACACS+, RADIUS authentication, and certificate generation through Let's Encrypt and SCEP methods. The TRB143 also supports multiple VPN technologies including OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard, GRE, PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, ZeroTier, DMVPN, and Tinc. Multiple VPN clients and servers can operate simultaneously, enabling secure remote access and encrypted communication between utility infrastructure and monitoring systems.

The Teltonika TRB143 combines compact industrial hardware with extensive automation and remote management capabilities. Housed in a durable aluminium enclosure with IP30 protection, the gateway operates reliably in temperatures from -40 °C to 75 °C and humidity levels from 10% to 90% non-condensing. Measuring only 74.5 x 25 x 73 mm and weighing 145 g, the device is ideal for installations where space is limited. DIN rail, wall mount, and flat surface mounting options provide additional deployment flexibility. The gateway includes one digital input and one digital output for integration with external sensors, alarms, and automation systems. Configurable event notifications can be sent through SMS, email, or RMS, while the I/O Juggler feature enables custom automation scenarios based on defined conditions.

Power is supplied through a 4-pin industrial connector supporting 12 - 30 VDC input voltage, while passive PoE over LAN1 offers additional installation flexibility. The TRB143 supports industrial communication protocols including Modbus TCP, OPC UA, DNP3, DLMS/COSEM, and MQTT Gateway functionality. Data can be transmitted through HTTP(S), MQTT, or Azure MQTT protocols, while custom Lua scripting enables advanced telemetry and automation projects. Remote management is simplified through RMS, SNMP, TR-069, MQTT, JSON-RPC, AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, ThingWorx, and Cumulocity integration. Firmware updates, diagnostics, and configuration management can all be handled remotely, reducing maintenance costs and improving operational efficiency.
