Industrial LTE Router
The Teltonika RUT986 is an industrial-grade LTE router engineered for reliable long-term operation in demanding environments. It combines a trusted Telit LTE Cat 4 modem with a robust hardware platform, delivering mobile data speeds of up to 150 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink, with automatic fallback to 3G (up to 42 Mbps) and 2G networks to ensure continuous connectivity. The device is designed for seamless integration into industrial systems, offering a comprehensive set of physical interfaces. It includes 4 × RJ45 Ethernet ports (10/100 Mbps), enabling multiple wired connections, as well as serial communication via RS232 (DB9 connector with RTS/CTS flow control) and RS485 interfaces supporting both full-duplex (4-wire) and half-duplex (2-wire) modes with baud rates from 300 to 115200. These capabilities allow direct communication with PLCs, SCADA systems, and legacy industrial equipment.
In addition, the router features multiple digital inputs and outputs via industrial connectors, allowing it to interact with sensors, alarms, and control systems. Serial functionality includes console access, Serial over IP, Modbus gateway, and NTRIP client support, further expanding integration possibilities. The hardware design includes dedicated antenna connectors (2 × SMA for LTE, 2 × RP-SMA for Wi-Fi, and 1 × SMA for GNSS), a USB port for external devices, and clearly visible status LEDs for connection monitoring. The aluminium enclosure with plastic panels provides durability, while IP30 protection ensures safe operation in industrial settings. With wide operating temperature support from -40 °C to +65 °C and flexible mounting options, the RUT986 is a reliable industrial gateway for complex deployments.
Advanced Networking
The RUT986 delivers advanced networking functionality required for industrial and enterprise applications. It supports both static and dynamic routing protocols, including BGP, OSPF v2, RIP v1/v2, EIGRP, and NHRP, enabling integration into complex network infrastructures. Policy-based routing allows precise traffic control, ensuring optimal data flow across multiple connections. The router supports a wide range of network protocols such as TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, ICMP, DNS, HTTP(S), MQTT, SNMP, SSH, and VXLAN, making it suitable for IoT, telemetry, and cloud-based solutions. DHCP features include static and dynamic IP allocation, DHCP relay, and advanced lease management. Wireless connectivity is provided via Wi-Fi 4 (802.11b/g/n), supporting Access Point and Station modes, with up to 100 simultaneous clients.
Advanced wireless technologies such as mesh networking (802.11s), fast roaming (802.11r), BSS transition management (802.11v), and radio resource measurement (802.11k) ensure stable connectivity in dynamic environments. Network segmentation is enabled through VLAN support (port- and tag-based), while QoS and Smart Queue Management (SQM) allow traffic prioritization based on protocol, port, or service. WMM and 802.11e further enhance wireless traffic handling. Security features include a configurable firewall with port forwarding and custom rules, DDoS protection, SYN flood mitigation, and port scan prevention. Authentication methods include pre-shared keys, X.509 certificates, TACACS+, and RADIUS. VPN support covers OpenVPN (multiple encryption options), L2TP, PPTP, and IPsec, ensuring secure remote access and encrypted communication.
Remote Management
The RUT986 operates on RutOS, an OpenWrt-based Linux operating system designed for industrial networking. It supports development environments such as BusyBox shell, Lua, and C/C++, allowing advanced customization and integration into specialized solutions. The system is powered by a Mediatek MIPS 24KEc CPU (580 MHz), with 128 MB DDR2 RAM and 32 MB NOR flash memory, ensuring stable and efficient performance. The device supports zero-touch deployment, enabling automatic configuration without manual setup. Centralized management is available via Teltonika Remote Management System (RMS), which provides remote access, monitoring, firmware updates (FOTA), and diagnostics. The WebUI interface (HTTP/HTTPS) includes system logs, kernel logs, event logs, and real-time status monitoring.
GNSS functionality supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS systems, providing accurate positioning data accessible via WebUI, SMS, or RMS. This makes the router suitable for fleet management, asset tracking, and mobile deployments. Power is supplied through a 4-pin industrial DC connector (9–30 VDC) with reverse polarity and surge protection. Passive PoE (Mode B) is supported via LAN1. Power consumption remains efficient, with less than 2 W idle and under 7 W at peak usage. Additional features include SMS management, SSH access (v1/v2), firmware update notifications, and remote troubleshooting tools. Combined with extensive monitoring and control capabilities, the RUT986 is a comprehensive solution for industrial connectivity and network management.
